Use Your HVAC To Take Charge of Your Asheville Utility Bill

One of the best ways to keep more cash in the bank is to make changes at home with your HVAC system. Here are some easy, inexpensive steps you can take today to lower utility bills.

3 Tips to Lower Utility Bills

  • Use the thermostat wisely. If it’s located near a heat source, doors or windows, this can cause an inaccurate temperature reading and the system may turn on more often than really needed. You can also save more by lowering the temperature to 68 degrees in the winter and raising it to 78 degrees in the summer during the hours that you’re awake at home. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, you can save 5 to 15 percent on utility bills just by turning the temperature back for eight hours at a time each day. A programmable thermostat may help you better achieve this since it eliminates the need to remember to manually change the temperature throughout the day.
  • Install the right air filter for your home’s HVAC system. By choosing one that’s compatible with your system and your household’s needs, you’ll not only lower energy use, but you will experience better indoor air quality as well. Replacing or cleaning the air filter monthly is also vital for maximizing its efficiency.
  • Make sure nothing’s covering vents. Furniture or other obstructions over vents hinders airflow, which puts a strain on the system and diminishes the heating or cooling effect. You should also make sure all of the vents are open.
